Lincolnshire BioBlitz
2010 has been declared International Year of Biodiversity by the United Nations - the year that celebrates the diversity of life on Earth.
Biodiversity or biological diversity is the astonishing richness and variety of wildlife and habitats on Earth. It’s not just the charismatic tigers and elephants but every plant, animal, fungus and micro-organism, the habitats in which they live, and the genetic diversity between individuals within a species.
"Biodiversity is not only numbers, nor is it only the wouldja-believe-it page in a children's comic.
It is the method by which the planet works."
Simon Barnes
Biodiversity is the web of life of which we are an integral part and upon which we depend. It is essential to sustaining the living networks and systems that provide us with health, wealth, food, fuel and vital services providing freshwater, fertile soil and clean air.
The Lincolnshire BioBlitz took place on 9 & 10 July 2010 at Banovallum House, Horncastle
A BioBlitz is a 24 hour wildlife survey where we try to find and identify as much wildlife as possible.
More than 100 people took part in the fifth annual BioBlitz at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Headquarters, Banovallum House in Horncastle. Naturalists and members of the public searched for and identified as many different species as possible.
Over 24 hours, 565 different species were recorded.
BioBlitzing the gardens of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust headquarters, Banovallum House in Horncastle, illustrates just how much biodiversity is out there. In total 961 species have now been found and identified in the gardens of Banovallum House, an area that covers just once hectare.
