Careers in Nature Conservation

If you are thinking about a career in nature conservation, here are a few helpful hints:

  1. It is very competitive.

  2. The wages are low, even if you are highly qualified.

  3. Hours can be very long, with no overtime pay.

  4. You must be very committed.

  5. You must have experience to even be considered for a job. However, nature conservation is in that you can gain valuable and recognised experience as a volunteer - and that will count when applying for a job.

  6. A very high proportion of people employed by conservation organisations nowadays have further education experience - diplomas or degrees. Contact higher education establishments for details of courses.

  7. Working in conservation is very rewarding but you have to be prepared to work hard and you need sympathetic family support with the long hours.

  8. Please do not get in touch with the Trust if you are enquiring after the availability of jobs. We get overwhelmed by requests.

  9. When we have vacancies, we also advertise in the Countryside Jobs Service (www.countryside-jobs.com) and the Environment Post (www.eco-uk.com), and also on our Web site.

  10. Please do contact the Trust if you want to volunteer on nature reserves, or in other ways.

  11. Join the Trust or other conservation organisations. Any job application will not be taken seriously if you cannot prove a genuine commitment to nature conservation.
