Feeding Wild Birds

A question often asked is:

"When should I start feeding the birds in my garden?"

Another one is:

"When should I stop feeding the birds in my garden?"

You can start feeding birds in the autumn or winter, this is up to you, but the golden rule is to carry on feeding them until the warmer weather starts.  They really do depend on your food once they have "discovered" you.

If you suddenly stop feeding in the spring, the parent birds, which are under stress with looking after their brood, lack the energy needed to forage for caterpillars, etc.

Try changing to seed or peanuts that can't be taken whole (by using a fine mesh feeder) or put out fat balls, bones, etc, hung up off the ground.  Adult birds can use these to "refuel" themselves and look for more appropriate food for their young.

Don't forget to maintain a plentiful supply of fresh water in shallow containers all year round, and keep the containers washed out and replenished from time to time.

Bird table hygiene is important.  Mouldy or contaminated food is very bad for birds and can even be fatal!  Keep an eye on bird tables and feeders and make a point of giving them a regular clean.

Bird feed may be obtained from the following outlets:
» Lincoln Castle Square Wildlife Gift Shop
» Far Ings Visitor Centre (all codes)
» Gibraltar Point Visitor Centre (all codes)

* Larger quantities can be ordered if not stocked at the individual shop.
* Please contact us via email if you require any further information about these feeds, or you wish to place an order.

Local Stockists Needed!
Can you help us?

Bird Feeders

We are trying to build up a network of volunteer stockists for our Bird Feed and Feeders.

The idea is that we would provide you with a stock of Bird Feed and a range of Feeders for you to sell in your local area.  We would also provide re-order forms and a stock of this leaflet with your contact details to help with local publicity.

If you are interested in volunteering as a Bird Feed Stockist, or in helping the Trust by becoming a member (if you are not one already) or by volunteering to help in some other way, e.g. in our shops or on our reserves, please contact:
